Ennishlea Salon · West End · Glasgow

Three rooms, one evening.

A members’ card salon at thirty-eight Cresswell Lane, two minutes’ walk from the Hunterian’s Mackintosh House. Open Tuesday through Sunday.

§ Concept

A members’ card salon for the West End.

Ennishlea occupies the ground and first floors of a restored 1893 sandstone tenement on Cresswell Lane, in the cobbled lane-quarter of Hillhead. Three rooms across two floors: The Card Room at the rear; The Cresswell Bar at the front, opening onto the lane; The Dining Room on the first floor, the modern Scottish kitchen above.

The register is academic rather than louche — the audience is the Hunterian Gallery / Glasgow School of Art / University of Glasgow / BBC Scotland orbit. Brass library lamps, dark-stained Glasgow ash, a mantel stencilled with Macdonald’s roses. A glass of an Argyll-coast sparkling, a pot of Mariage Frères Earl Grey, a quiet table.

The salon hosts members’ social card play; the kitchen serves modern Scottish with European technique; the bar carries the five-region single-malt programme. Members and their guests are welcome; the door policy is eighteen-plus.

§ The Cresswell Bar

A long Glasgow-ash counter.

The Cresswell Bar opens onto the cobbles of Cresswell Lane through a bay window whose stained-glass roundels — rose-mauve, old-rose, silvergrey — cast their colour on the floor at certain evening hours. Sixteen seats at the long Glasgow-ash counter; eight more at small tables-of-two against the inside wall.

The bar is the only room with a screen visible. Live screenings of Six Nations Scotland, The Open Championship, Wimbledon, and Champions League midweek run during their seasons; audio is kept low; the room’s handbell marks the tries and the goals if the room missed them. The cocktail list is short. The five-region single-malt programme is anchored at the south end of the counter.

§ Members and guests

Voices from our tables.

‘Ennishlea is the only room on Cresswell Lane where you can have an evening of cards without anyone calling it a poker night, and where the kitchen actually understands what “a quiet table at half past nine” means. The Hebridean langoustine on a Tuesday is a shape of supper I have not had since the old Gannet.’

Murdo C. · Member · Hyndland · since 2026

‘Took a guest pass on a Wednesday in February. The card host was Lewis-born and Brussels-trained, and the salon-bar’s stained-glass roundels turned the floor pink at five o’clock. We stayed for the cranachan.’

Aileen K. · Guest · Dowanhill · February 2026

‘Hunterian at six, Ennishlea at eight, Òran Mór at ten. This is the working evening I had waited for since the BBC moved up to Pacific Quay.’

§ Sport

Live in The Cresswell Bar.

Four sport-event series run live at the bar: Six Nations Rugby (Scotland matches, home and away, February and March), The Open Championship (the third week of July, rotating Royal venues), The Championships, Wimbledon (the All-England fortnight at the end of June and through the first half of July), and UEFA Champions League midweek (Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during the season).

The salon does not screen Old Firm derbies — the salon’s neutrality on Glasgow’s Celtic-Rangers fixture is house policy and is enforced uniformly.
